Lexisy is an English-to-Chinese vocabulary learning tool offered as an Android app and a browser extension. This page describes what information Lexisy collects, how it is used, and the choices available to you.
What we collect
Account information
When you sign in, Lexisy uses Firebase Authentication to manage your account. We receive your email address. Your password is securely hashed by Firebase; we never see or store it directly.
Your vocabulary data
If you enable cloud backup, the following data is stored in Google Firestore under your account:
- Words you have looked up (history)
- Words you have favourited
- Familiarity ratings (0–5) you assign to favourited words
- Quiz answer history
- Premium status
This data is scoped to your Firebase user ID — no other account can read it.
Selected text (when you use Lexisy to translate)
On Android, when you select text in another app and pass it to Lexisy via the system "Process Text" menu, that text is queried against the offline dictionary stored on your device. In the browser extension, when you select text on a webpage, the same local lookup happens.
If the word is not found in the offline dictionary, the selected text is sent to MyMemory, a third-party translation service, to retrieve a fallback translation.
What we do not collect
- No analytics SDK (no Google Analytics, no Firebase Analytics, no Crashlytics).
- No device identifiers, IP addresses, or location information.
- No advertising trackers.
- No access to your contacts, photos, microphone, camera, or files outside what you explicitly select.
- We do not sell or rent your data.
Third-party services
Lexisy uses the following third parties:
- Firebase (Google) — Authentication and Firestore data storage. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- MyMemory — Translation fallback for words not found in the offline dictionary. See MyMemory's privacy policy.
- GitHub Releases — Dictionary file hosting. No user data is sent.
Permissions
Android
- Internet — for Firebase sign-in, cloud backup, and dictionary downloads.
- Notifications — for word reminders. Can be disabled in system settings.
Browser extension
- Reading selected text on web pages — for the "select to translate" feature.
- Local storage — for caching the offline dictionary and your preferences.
- Notifications — for word reminders.
Data retention and deletion
Your data is retained as long as your account exists. To delete your data, sign in and delete your account from the Account screen. This removes your Firestore document and your Firebase Authentication record. The offline dictionary downloaded to your device can be cleared by uninstalling the app or clearing the extension's local storage.
Children
Lexisy is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Security
We use industry-standard methods to protect your data:
- All network traffic uses HTTPS.
- Firebase Authentication securely manages your password — we never see or store it.
- Firestore data is access-controlled per user ID via Firebase security rules.
No method of transmission is 100% secure, but we apply commercially reasonable safeguards.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes are reflected by the "Last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app and on this page.
